China ban could aid UK recycling

The Chinese ban on imported plastic packaging waste could drive the production of better quality recyclate, despite initial reports that the impact would be negligible.

Linpac Recycling purchasing manager Bernard Chase said that a ban could be the impetus for the UK to “encourage a robust recycling process with the emphasis on quality rather than quantity”, for example through segregated green bin collections.

China was said to be implementing a ban on imports of post-consumer low-density plastic film products, such as carrier bags, from 1 March. However, as Packaging News went to press, the status of such a ban was still undetermined and may have been the result of a mistranslated Chinese document.
