Clear definitions needed to establish bioplastics certification

Exact definitions of what constitutes a ‘bioplastic’ are a crucial first step before a certification system for the materials can be established, according to industry body European Bioplastics.

Vice-chairman Jöran Reske said established definitions for bio-based plastics would initially be used as a tool to help companies develop products, but could be built on to create a certification system.

Speaking at last week's European Bioplastics conference in Paris, Reske said a certification system, similar to that used for compostable materials, would be an "important tool" for market development.

"Definitions should be industry-driven, but transparent and based on fact," he said.

European Bioplastics estimates that annual global production of bioplastics will increase six-fold to 1.5 million tonnes by 2011, up from 262,000 tonnes in 2007.

There will also be a significant increase in bio-based non-biodegradeable plastics – production is expected to account for almost 40% of the global total, compared with 12% today.

Synthetic biodegradeable materials will represent most of the remaining production, with only a small amount being due to bio-based biodegradeable materials.
