Coca-Cola has described packaging as “not waste, but a valuable resource” in its latest campaign to encourage plastics recycling over the Christmas period.

The soft drinks giant has joined forces with designers Basso & Brooke and former Blur guitarist Alex James to develop a range of limited edition baubles made from recycled plastics.

The aim is to remind consumers that plastics are not just waste, but can have a second life through recycling.

Liz Lowe, Coca-Cola Great Britain citizenship manager, said: “We want to raise awareness about the very real benefits of recycling and to encourage people to recycle more. Our packaging isn’t just waste, it’s a valuable resource which can be used again and again.”

The collaborators have also designed giant Christmas trees from recycled plastic. James’s tree will be on display at The Roundhouse, a London music venue, until January.

Designer Bruno Basso, of Basso & Brooke, said: “It’s great to be part of a campaign that will hopefully show people what a flexible resource plastic is and encourage them to recycle bottles and packaging.”

The decorations are available via the Coke Zone website until 19 December.

They are free of charge, as each customer who registers on the CokeZone site receives 10 points, but a donation of £5 will be made to climate change charity together for each one ordered.

According to recycling charity Recoup, two-thirds of plastic bottles that go through households are not recycled. On Monday (8 December) Coca-Cola unveiled its sixth on-the-go Recycling Zone at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey.
