Corus continues to fund Swansea steel recycling schemeliz.wells@haymarket.com, 5 September 2008Be the first to comment on this article Corus Steel Packaging has decided to support a recycling incentive scheme in Swansea for a second year following a 24% increase in steel recycling by local residents. The scheme, run by Corus and Swansea Council, has resulted in householders recycling 530 tonnes of steel cans in the past 12 months. Residents who recycled could win a council tax free year by attaching special ‘Make me a winner’ address tags to their green recycling bags. They were encouraged to put everything from food and drinks and pet food cans to caps and lids in their green bags. In 2007, 428 tonnes of steel cans were collected. Corus Steel Packaging Recycling, based in Trostre, South Wales, is the UK’s largest steel recycler. The firm provided £5,000 of funding for promotional materials and will match this amount for this year’s scheme. Communications manager Naomi Pope said: “We are working hard to increase awareness of the benefits of recycling steel packaging and the number of steel cans recycled has more than doubled over the last seven years.” John and Barbara Roach from Kittle, Swansea won a council tax free year. Their winning tag was selected at random from more than 40,000 entries. The collected steel is taken to Corus’ CanRoute collection centres, which are operated by steel processing companies who receive, quality check, store and bale steel cans before delivering them to Corus in the correct form for them to be recycled at one of Corus’ steel reprocessing centres.
