Coventry Council drops anti-plastic bag campaign

Coventry City Council has been forced to abandon its scheme to phase out plastic bags in the city due to lack of resources.

According to a spokesman for the council’s sustainable city team, the scheme has been put on hold due to limited resources and staff.

Over the last eight months the council has worked with consumers and retailers to draw attention to the disposable nature of plastic bags and reduce the amount distributed within the city.

An estimated 890 tonnes of plastic bags are thrown away in Coventry every year, which are sent for incineration. Half originate from supermarkets and the other half come from clothing shops.

“It’s heightened people’s awareness of packaging and the need to reduce it,” said the spokesman.

The council is now working to “encourage members to reduce their carbon footprint” through energy warden schemes, ISO14001 teams and more.
