CPI refutes reports of paper stockpiling

The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) has refuted recent media reports of a build-up of recovered paper due to the decline in overseas demand.

In a statement, the CPI said that stockpiling only occurs with a small percentage of poor quality paper and urged people to keep recycling.

“Good quality recovered paper is still in demand on the global market and we expect this to continue throughout the credit crunch. The issue of quality is fundamental to the successful recycling of all materials, not just paper,” it said.

Greenstar reported this week that it would continue to sell its processed paper, much of it from co-mingled collections, to both British and international reprocessors.

However, chief executive Ian Wakelin said that it has had to adapt its financial model by increasing service charges at its processing facilities until recyclable prices and markets recover.
