Dell acts on packaging after criticismliz.wells@haymarket.com, 13 May 2008Be the first to comment on this article Dell, the global computer company, is examining its packaging with suppliers after coming under fire from several large online diaries and blogs in the US. The computer company was criticised for its use of large packages to send relatively small items. One post said: "The box that Dell used to send a 2GB drive was ludicrous. It was about 100 times too big. Such idiotic shipping practices waste space on trucks and planes, requiring more trip, therefore more fuel used and more pollution. " In response to the criticism, Dell said it had launched a new initiative to optimise packaging across its portfolio. Tom Dwyer, Dell's community liaison for the environment in the US, told the company's official blog that it had already issued a directive to its suppliers to use envelopes for small items such as USB sticks. In a statement, Dell in the UK told Packaging News: "Dell is working with its European and UK suppliers to examine its packaging processes. There are some short-term fixes we will implement soon in the UK, as well as longer-term issues that we will be addressing." Dell declined to provide any further details about its plans for the UK.
