Dell aims to cut packaging materialsliz.wells@haymarket.com, 16 December 2008Be the first to comment on this article Dell, the computer manufacturer, has announced a new initiative to eliminate 20 million pounds worth of packaging material over the next four years. The company said it plans to cut desktop and laptop packaging materials by around 10%, increase recyclable content in cushioning and corrugate packaging by 40% and make 75% of packaging components kerbside recyclable by 2012. Dell will use a variety a novel cushioning methods, including molded pulp made out of recycled paper and inflatable air bags that are kerbside recyclable in Europe. The company also will employ high-density polyethylene thermal-formed cushions, which can be made from recycled milk jugs and laundry detergent bottles. Oliver Campbell, Dell’s senior manager of global packaging, said the company views the measures as a first step. It is expected the cost savings from the project will be around $8.1m over four years.
