EA calls on packaging to sign up to carbon reduction schemeSimeon Goldstein, 23 February 2010Be the first to comment on this article The Environment Agency is urging firms in the packaging sector to find out their responsibilities under the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme. The CRC is the successor to the Carbon Reduction Agreement and the EA said the scheme could reduce carbon emissions by 11.6m tonnes by 2020. It affects firms that have at least one half hourly metre that need to register with the EA, or authorities in Scotland and Northern Ireland between April and September. Tony Grayling, EA head of climate change and sustainability, said participants would also “save participants money in terms of lower energy bills”. “The analysis shows the investments needed to reduce carbon emissions more than pay for themselves in terms of energy bills within a relatively short period,” he said. Grayline said the EA had been working actively with the Department for Energy and Climate Change to make sure organisations were aware of the scheme. “We are reasonably confident that we have contacted all organisations who will qualify for the threshold and we hope that as the scheme progresses it will be brought to the attention of directors and board members,” he said.
