Ecover turns to sugar cane-based packagingJosh Brooks, 26 August 2010Be the first to comment on this article Cleaning products manufacturer Ecover is the latest firm to unveil plans to adopt sugar cane-based polyethylene for its packaging. Ecover is set to use the material from Brazilian firm Braskem from next year in a bid to reduce the environmental impact of its packaging. The announcement comes two weeks after FMCG giant Procter & Gamble announced it would begin to use the HDPE across three cosmetics brands from next year. Ecover marketing manager Tom Domen said the firm was investing in product and process development to see where it could implement positive change. “Our packaging is an obvious part of this,” said Domen. “The venture with Braskem will have a considerable impact on our CO2 emissions and we look forward to launching the new packaging on the market next year.” Braskem uses sugar can to produce the HDPE that is said to emit 75% less greenhouse gases during its lifetime than traditional polyethylene. Last year, Tetra Pak said it would be piloting Braskem’s material in plastic caps and closures by 2011. Click here for today’s headlines from across the packaging industry Speak Your Mind |
