SAICA, the Spanish-owned paper and corrugated packaging firm, has received an international award for its commitment to environmental practice and support for recycling in the supply chain.

The Bureau of International Recycling recognised the firm’s achievements with a prestigious Papyrus Award for its work on recovering used paper and also its proposed energy-from-waste (EfW) plant at El Burgo de Ebro.

SAICA president Eduardo Aragües said the family-owned firm was delighted to receive an award that recognised its work on recycling, energy efficiency and the environment.

“These factors have long been cornerstones for the successful development of the company,” he said.

SAICA bought SCA’s UK corrugated business last year and is planning to build a recycled paper mill near Manchester.

In Spain, it is investing £125m in the EfW site that will turn 460,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste into enough energy to supply 50,000 households, the firm said.

The plant, which should start operations in 2011 will save 520,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
