European Bioplastics counter-attacks on recyclability

European Bioplastics has attacked criticisms that biopolymers are having a negative effect on recycling infrastructure, in a seminar at Interpack.

European Bioplastics chairman Harald Kaeb admitted that biopolymers could not be recycled "for the time being", but said that "traditional polymers did not think about recycling for a long time".

"Bioplastics do need to look at recycling, because the biodegradation needs to be done in a controlled way, in industrial conditions.

"But, at the moment, the need for good recycling facilities is more acute for the conventional polymer industry."

Kaeb said the current world situation of high food prices, and questions over whether crops should be grown for industrial use, required "intelligent research of how we use materials".

"Perhaps we can look to turn crops into bioplastic products and then into fuels, rather than directly turning crops into fuel."

Also at Interpack, materials supplier PolyOne launched two new additives to improve the transparency and impact resistance of products made from polylactic acid.

The new lines are available as masterbatches or in liquid form and expand the company's range of additives that includes products to reduce static and increase UV barrier.
