FDF members recover 80% of pack wasteliz.wells@haymarket.com, 27 November 2008Be the first to comment on this article Food and drink manufacturers are recycling or recovering around 80% of the food and packaging waste created in their factories, according to a new report from the Food and Drink Federation (FDF). The Making a Real Difference Report, published today (27 November) to mark a year since the launch of its Environmental Ambition, revealed that its members have also doubled their participation in the Courtauld Commitment. The number of members supporting the commitment now stands at 22. It reported that four more of its members have recently signed up to the Courtauld Commitment – ABF, apetito, British Pepper and Spice and UIN Foods. The report also revealed that food and drink firms have reduced their CO2 emissions by 17% since 1990 – an average of 58,000 tonnes less CO2 per year since 1990. It said that the reduction in emissions has been achieved by members improving the energy efficiency of their factories, by boosting productivity and by using more renewable sources of energy. The FDF concluded that the results show that its members are on target to meet their commitment to reduce emissions by 20% by 2010, compared with 1990. Fiona Dawson, chair of FDF’s Sustainability and Competitiveness Steering Group and managing director of Mars UK Snackfood, said: “Our report demonstrates that our members are committed to making a real difference to the environment. “Our achievements to date are impressive and provide a strong foundation on which we will build as we look to meet the ambitions we set ourselves in 2007.” In October 2007, the FDF launched its five-fold Environmental Ambition which set out a plan for member companies to reduce their environmental impact. The plan incudes sending zero food and packaging waste to landfill from 2015 and to make a significant contribution to Wrap’s work to achieve an absolute reduction in the level of packaging reaching households by 2010.
