Fire crews are continuing to battle a blaze that broke out at a waste recycling plant on Tuesday.

The fire at City Industrial Waste in Campsie, on the outskirts on Londonderry, was first reported at 10.20am on Tuesday and crews are reported to still be at the site today.

A spokeswoman for Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue (NIFR) service told Packaging News that crews were continuing to fight the fire today. “We’re making steady progress and will continue throught today. There is a possibility it will continue to tomorrow, but it is too early to say.”

A statement on the NIFR website continued: “Initial resources mobilised to a fire at a waste recycling plant on the Mobuoy Road on the outskirts of Londonderry requested the assistance of further resources.

“Crews are using main jets and aerial jets to prevent the fire, which involves 1,000 bales of domestic waste material, from spreading to other parts of the plant.”

The fire service has said that early indications pointed to the fire being started accidentally. Environmental health services are at the fire and local residents have been urged to keep windows closed, although the materials at the site are said to be non-hazardous.

City Industrial waste employs around 80 staff and provides public and private sector recycling services.

A video of the blaze has been posted to the YouTube website and can be viewed below.
