A Lincolnshire supplier of salads and vegetables to major supermarkets has been fined nearly 20,000 for failing to comply with packaging waste legislation.

Freshtime UK pleaded guilty to not registering with a packaging recycling scheme for six years and avoiding £17,853 in fees. It had failed to pay for the recovery and recycling of 1,132 tonnes of paper, plastic and aluminium.

Boston Magistrates Court fined the firm £19,800 on Monday (22 June) and instructed it to pay Envrionment Agency (EA) costs of £2,388.

The Producer Responsibility (Packaging Waste) Regulations 1997 require firms with an annual turnover of more than £2m that handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging to register with the EA or other recycling scheme.

EA officer Helen Kirchen said: “By not complying with the regulations, Freshtime UK have not made their contribution towards recycling.”

Freshtime UK was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
