The Forestry Stewardship Council held FSC Friday last week (26 September) to raise awareness of the FSC logo.

The FSC is also hoping to highlight the importance of UK forests and a number of events will take place in FSC certified forests during  the weekend.

More than 45 firms are supporting the activities, including papermakers such as Tullis Russell Paper Group, James McNaughton Group, Kimberly Clark and Arjowiggins, retailers such as Boots and B&Q, and a number of local councils.

Tetrapak, for example, is urging consumers to look for the FSC logo on products as it celebrates the anniversary of the launch of Sainsbury’s chopped tomatoes in Tetra Recart FSC certified cartons, which can now be recycled in 85% of local authorities in the UK.

Some participating companies are offering discounts on their FSC products, many are promoting FSC in stores and on their websites, others have donated prizes for competitions or sponsored material for FSC Friday events.

There is also a Forest Family Fun Day for Woking Beaver scouts and their families, school trips to FSC forests and a range of events for young people’s groups.

FSC UK’s marketing officer Rosie Teasdale said: “We want to use FSC Friday to make people more aware of the importance of responsible forestry and the role of the FSC.

“The FSC logo can now be seen on food packaging, tissues, books, magazines and much more. We hope that FSC Friday will encourage consumers to look out for these FSC products when they are out shopping,” she added.
