Iggesund launches bioplastic-coated Invercote

Iggesund Paperboard has launched a bioplastic-coated paperboard aimed at the cold drinks and frozen food markets

The Invercote board is coated with a bioplastic at Iggesund’s paperboard finishing department at Strömsbruk and hsa been created in response to “clear demand” for biodegradable barrier materials.

Iggesund has spent the last couple of years trialling bioplastics as barrier materials and has found one that meets the EN 13432 standard for compostability.

The company is working with more than one barrier, but so far all have been starch based.

It recommends testing for every new application as the barrier properties are reduced compared to PE.

In a statement, Iggesund’s product manager for plastic coated and laminated products Ola Buhrman said that bioplastics pose new challenges for manufacturers as the new materials “place higher demands on both production technology and equipment”.

“It’s very clear that this development is being driven by the market’s demand for greater environmental awareness, and that customers are prepared to pay more for a biodegradable material,” he said.
