Incpen questions environmental sense of Green Alliance demands

The Green Alliance’s call for all food packaging to be recyclable or compostable by 2013 is “neither realistic, useful nor environmentally sound”, according to the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (Incpen).

Although Incpen welcomed the Green Alliance's call for closer collaboration in the supply chain, director Jane Bickerstaffe said that focusing on waste alone would not ensure the most sustainable packaging material was chosen.

"Resource-efficient packaging is sometimes recyclable or compostable – but sometimes not," she said.

The Green Alliance yesterday (28 November) launched its Applications for Compostable Packaging guidance, which aims to help companies assess whether compostable materials are the most appropriate option for food packaging.

Speaking at the launch event, John Williams of the National Non-Food Crops Centre said functionality was "the most important factor" in using bioplastics.

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) said it was important to "engage home composters" with the issue.

Its figures suggest that around a third of households with gardens compost their waste, but less than 20% of those include packaging.
