Recycling firm Jayplas has started up its 30,000 tonne food-grade PET recycling facility in Northamptonshire.

Jayplas bought the site last October and it has taken 10 months to convert it to recycle food grade.

Material comes from the firm’s own sorting facility in Mansfield and from local authorities and other waste management firms.

Jayplas said the facility would help increase the amount of recovered PET that could be turned back into food packaging in the UK.

“There’s still a high percentage of plastic bottles that are being exported,” a spokesman told Packaging News.

“We are committed to recycling as much as possible in the UK and improving the infrastructure to do that.”

The spokesman added that the firm was at the planning stages for an HDPE reprocessing facility that could open in 2011.

Jayplas is the trading name for J&A Young and has six facilities in the UK and one in China.
