Jill Park: Packaging is a girl’s best friend

Features editor Jill Park attempts to expand her jewellery collection even further by exploring the possibilities of necklaces made from bottle caps.

It is a known fact that I am a keen fan of a chunky necklace. Wood, plastic, metal, I’ve got them all. But packaging?

This is one form of jewellery that I have yet to try, which is why Israeli jewellery firm Kotik Precious Metal caught my eye.

Yoav Kotik trained at the Bezalel academy of art and design before starting Kotik. His work heavily features crown closures bent and welded into pasty-like shapes and baubles, often still retaining their garish branding.

Included in the range are necklaces, pendants, rings, earrings and bracelets.

Kotik scours for used metal items, especially drinks cans and caps from different places around the world. He regularly leads masterclasses in sculpture and design in recycled materials and has presented in galleries across Israel, the UK, the Netherlands and Japan.

“We select them and handle them with care, delicately polishing them from the dust of the road, moulding them to create as unique pieces of jewellery as precious metals,” he says.

“The work with these materials fulfils their vast potential, revealing layers and exposing emotions, some of them attached to their previous role in their past life.”

His dedication is clear. Necklaces are packed full of reams of Fanta bottle caps and rings with iconic branding from cans of Heineken and even Smirnoff caps.

From Fanta’s gaudy orange through to the elegant plain gold closure, there is something for every taste. Maybe next time I visit a bottle factory, I’ll have to have a go myself.
