Fiddes Payne, the herbs, spices and home-baking supplier, has been ordered to pay 16,577 for failing to comply with packaging waste legislation.

Fiddes Payne had pleaded guilty to failing to register the Environment Agency (EA) and meet the requirements of the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations to recycle and recover packaging waste between 2004 and 2006.

Banbury Magistrates Court fined the firm £10,550 and ordered it to pay the EA £2,758 in costs and £3,254 in compensation for the unpaid registration fees.

Fiddes Payne declined to comment.

The EA said it had found Fiddes Payne had not registered as part of a routine check carried out in August 2006. In August 2007, it signed up to compliance scheme Tag Pack.

Under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations, firms with an annual turnover of more than £2m that handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year must register with the EA or compliance scheme.

Enviroment officer Karen Roberts said it was disappointing there were still a “significant number” of non-compliant firms, despite the regulations having been in force for more than a decade.
