M-real tests find cartonboard ‘as effective’ as heavier materials

M-real says tests have confirmed that its cartonboard packaging, which is up to 44% lighter than white-lined chipboard, can be used by its customers as effectively as the chipboard.

The company, which counts brands such as Unilever and Nestlé among its customers, enlisted an external firm to carry out box compression tests.

The study worked with M-real customers including Bird’s Eye to test the lighter cartonboard packaging in real-life situations such as stacking and palletising.

Matthew Terry, the company’s technical services manager, said: “An external company did tests with our customers throughout the whole supply chain and found an average of 44% savings in weight could be made with a folding box, compared to white-lined chipboard used by some competitors.”

However, he said both board and carton strength decreased when relative humidity rose from 50% to 80%. Box compression strength also decreased by 15-25%, depending on board grade during these conditions.

Terry added: “Today, cartons are required to meet the standards of the retail chain in both quality and functionality. They not only need to protect and promote the product, but also to be cost-efficient and enable efficient handling in the areas where the highest costs are incurred.”
