The environment ministry in the Balkan state of Macedonia is to ban the use of plastic bags in the retail and food sectors, including markets, from 1 January 2009.

Consumers will continue to be able to use a plastic bag for products weighing more than 5kg, but they will have to pay for them. It is not clear what the charge will be.

Environment minister Nexhati Jakupi said the move was part of government plans to “reduce excessive use” and the “improper disposal” of the bags.

The government in the capital Skopje said it hopes to stimulate the use of reusable cotton bags.

Macedonia generates 650,000 tonnes of waste a year or 300-350kg of waste per person.
