MPs in portion packaging pushstevenkiernan, 16 July 2007Be the first to comment on this article The government should encourage retailers to use smarter food packaging, such as better portioning of products, to help tackle food waste, according to a group of MPs.
The cross-party body called on the government to throw its weight behind the Waste and Resources Action Programme's (Wrap) upcoming campaign to raise awareness of the UK's food waste problem. Wrap estimates that UK households throw away one third of all food, and is working to reduce consumer food waste by 100,000 tonnes by March 2008. The report also rejected the government's controversial plans to introduce alternate weekly rubbish collections (AWCs), saying that more research was needed to establish whether they would result in improved recycling levels.
