Marks & Spencer has heavily refuted industry rumours that it is cutting its investment in Plan A, its five-year eco-plan.

An M&S spokeswoman told Packaging News that the company’s customers “believe it’s as important as ever” that the company takes the lead on environmental issues.

However, she acknowledged that less money had been spent on marketing Plan A in year two of the scheme, a time when “many companies including us are looking at our marketing mix”.

M&S issued a progress update on Plan A on November 4, which said that so far 20 out of the plan’s 100 commitments had been completed and that a further 75 are underway.

Food carrier bag usage has fallen by 80% since the company introduced a 5p charge under the scheme, while 90% of its food packaging is now recyclable.

Sir Stuart Rose, chairman of M&S said that 22 months in Plan A was cost neutral thanks to progress made on energy saving, reducing waste and increasing efficiency.

He said: “We know our customers expect us to take a lead on ethical and environmental issues and we will continue to deliver”.
