M&S uses recycled HDPE from Greenstar WES

The Teeside-based recycler will annually send some 6,000 tonnes of rHDPE to Nampak after M&S approved the material for use in the Dairy Crest-supplied bottles.
 
Greenstar had to undergo a comprehensive testing process to ensure the recyclate sourced from its Birmingham facility and the open market was reprocessed to the correct standard.

Greenstar WES managing director James Donaldson told Packaging News: “Food safety is very important and we had to get the material absolutely right.”

Nampak business development director James Crick added that the material was vital in getting the product accepted and on retailers’ shelves.

“The next goal is to source much more rHDPE from the British market rather than having to import it,” he said.

Greenstar also supplies the material to Sharp Interpack and Linpac Packaging as well as reprocessing other materials such as crisp packets.

“Mixed plastics are an interesting challenge, but can be successfully recycled. It’s a case of putting in the capital to do it,” says Donaldson.

Greenstar WES is a subsidiary of waste management company Greenstar, in which Donaldson retains a 25% stake.
