MWV named in sustainability world index

MeadWestvaco Corp (MWV), the global packaging manufacturer, has been selected as a member of the 2008/09 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.

The global packaging company has been included on the index for the fifth consecutive year based on its success integrating environmental sustainability and social values into core business objectives and economic performance.

MWV was also ranked best-in-class in the containers and packaging industry group for the fourth consecutive year, demonstrating “outstanding leadership” in criteria such as risk and crisis management, sustainable fibre and pulp, and corporate citizenship and philanthropy.

John A. Luke, chairman and chief executive officer of MWV, said: “Our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility continues to influence the innovative products and processes that make our business and our communities more sustainable.

“Earning a place on the increasingly competitive Dow Jones Sustainability World Index demonstrates that we are creating value for our stakeholders while enhancing our reputation as a sustainability leader.”

The indexes are the first global indexes tracking the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide.

It comprises the leading companies in terms of sustainability around the world. It captures the top 10% based on long-term economic, environmental and social criteria out of the biggest 2,500 companies worldwide.
