National Trust for Scotland saves 63,000 bags in six months

The National Trust for Scotland has announced that demand for carrier bags in its 49 shops had fallen by 80% since it started charging in March.

This amounts to 63,000 fewer bags being distributed in the past six months.

In October 2006, the Scottish government decided against introducing a levy on single-use plastic bags.

The announcement follows a one-day ban on plastic bags held in two Wiltshire towns on Saturday (20 September) to encourage shoppers to use bags-for-life rather than single-use carriers.

The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust handed out the reusable bags in Melksham and Chippenham to raise awareness of the “impact of plastic bags on the environment”.

“It’s quite simple, the fewer plastic bags that are handed out, the less they will blow about and litter the countryside and our towns,” said Sara Cundy, the Trust’s waste minimisation officer.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s has followed Asda’s example and require its customers to ask the checkout operator for bags that will be removed from checkouts.
