Morrisons' own-brand labels to carry recyclability facts

Packaging for Morrisons' own-brand ranges are to be labelled according to their recyclability as part of a drive to raise awareness as to what can be recycled and where.

The ‘Recyclopedia’ symbols are being launched to coincide with Recycle Now Week 2007.

Morrisons packaging technologist Mark Lee said the retailer was working to reduce packaging and use more sustainable and recyclable resources, but that it did not have all the answers.

“We can share what we do know with our customers and together help the environment,” said Lee.

The Recyclopedia symbols feature a smiley face – the size of the smile showing the extent to which the product is recyclable – and a speech bubble containing more detailed information.

On Friday 8 June, Morrisons will carry out a nationwide “quiz” to find out about customer awareness of recycling, and it plans to use the information gathered to help inform decisions about future packaging.
