Campaign urges retailers to sign up to plastic bag free Christmas
A campaign for a "plastic bag free Christmas" was launched yesterday (June 14) by social change group We Are What We Do.
The group, which was behind the recent Anya Hindmarsh "I'm not a plastic bag" project, wants 2007 to be the first Christmas where using plastic bags is as "fashionable as wearing fur".
We Are What We Do founder David Robinson said: "This is a great opportunity to show the damage we are doing to the environment as a result of some of our simplest everyday actions."
The campaign calls upon retailers to purchase a "plastic ain't my bag" sticker, to be used to inform customers that they will not automatically give out plastic bags, and urges customers to be vigilant about not accepting bags when they are offered.
"There is no doubt that the range of initiatives, such as Sainsbury's recent 'no-bag days', are making a significant impact on the issue of plastic bag usage," said Robinson.
Virgin is the first national retailer to sign up to the scheme.
