Retailers recommit to pack reduction and recycling logo
The vast majority of major UK retailers yesterday (30 April) reiterated their commitment to packaging reduction and recyclability labelling in a series of pledges to tackle climate change.
The British Retail Consortium's (BRC) "commitments for a better retailing climate" call for a reduction of own-brand packaging by 2013, compared to 2005, and encourage brand owners to follow suit.
Retailers are also pressing for a "more uniform provision of recycling infrastructure in the UK". Signatories have agreed to identify where recycling is the best environmental solution, remove barriers to recycling and provide clear labelling on recyclability.
BRC director general Stephen Robertson said the retail sector's "unique close relationship with customers" gave it an opportunity and responsibility to engage on the issue of climate change.
The signatories include Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer, but not Morrisons, which is not a BRC member.
The five commitments are:
· Reduce direct environmental impact, so that less than 50% of waste is landfilled by 2013.
· Manage climate risks by ensuring continuity of supply.
· Help customers, staff and suppliers to reduce environmental impact, by developing carbon footprint standard, reducing packaging and supporting recycling.
· Engage in public policy debate.
· Report achievements transparently and consistently.
