Asda recognised for environmental efforts
Asda has won the management category prize at the Business Commitment to the Environment Environmental Leadership Awards for reducing the volume of packaging it uses.
The supermarket chain scooped the award by proving its commitment in three key areas – to reduce waste and eliminate its own landfill waste by 2010, to cut packaging and carrier bag usage by 25% by the end of this year and to cut carbon emissions from its stores and depots by 20% by the end of 2012.
Asda also impressed the judges with its bid to make new stores 30% more energy efficient by the end of 2009 and existing stores by 20% more by the end of 2012.
Doug Gurr, Asda's strategic director, said: "We're absolutely delighted to win this award. It recognises all of the hard work we have put in over the past 12 months to drive forward our packaging commitments."
