Tesco takes bags off the checkout
Tesco is requiring customers at its larger stores to ask checkout operators for single-use plastic carrier bags in a bid to reduce usage.
Britain's largest retailer maintains its policy of not charging customers, but said there were many ways to reduce the amount of bags it gives out.
A Tesco spokesman said: "Our policy on bags has not changed and this move is just a logical progression of that. It's still a carrot rather than a stick approach."
"Customers can still have bags, but there are many ways that we can reduce usage, such as Clubcard points to encourage reuse, or this latest method to make them think more about how many bags they are using."
The new scheme will be introduced at 166 Tesco Extra hypermarkets and 435 superstores, the spokesman said.
The announcement comes three weeks after Marks & Spencer revealed its policy of charging 5p for carrier bags at its food outlets had cut usage by 80%.

I feel this article reveals just how irresponsible Tescos are. My guess is that if their carrot approach worked then there still wouldn't be a problem with the amount of bags still being handed out at their tills. Tescos 'carrots' aren't that big & juicy, I guess.
They fear too much a loss of business & act too slowly to create a real change in attitudes about wastage. And just one reason why I am unable to shop there.
