Carluccio's charged with breaching packaging waste regulations

Restaurant chain Carluccio's has been charged for allegedly failing to comply with packaging waste legislation.

Carluccio's has been charged under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations for failing to register as a producer of packaging waste, failure to supply a certificate of compliance and failure to take reasonable steps to recover and recycle packaging waste.

Under the legislation, firms with a turnover of more than £2m, which handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year, have to register with either the Environment Agency or government-approved compliance scheme and pay a sum dependent on the size of their activity.

The case will be heard in City of Westminster Magistrates Court on 22 October.

Carluccio's could face a fine of £5,000 for each offence if found guilty in the Magistrates Court, or an unlimited fine if the case proceeds to the Crown Court.

No-one from the restaurant chain was available for comment.
