Greenstar rolls out waste management services

Greenstar UK, the Aylesbury-based waste management company, has opened three new facilities in its expanding material collections and handling network.

Greenstar's new operation in Camberley serves Surrey Heath Borough Council with recycling, refuse and green waste services. It also enables the firm to store dry recyclables in order to generate sufficient quantity of material for transporting to its MRF in Aldridge, near Birmingham.

Greenstar is offering its Green Space recycling service to the Camberley area, as well as to businesses in Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.

Meanwhile, a waste transfer station has been opened at Greenstar's Derby plant, in preparation for the 50,000 tonnes per year MRF that is set to start operating early next year.

The site will enable the pre-treatment of materials collected via a single stream co-mingled service in the city and paper and textiles from bring banks.

In mid-2009, Greenstar is also set to open a "super MRF" in North London.

Chief executive Ian Wakelin told Packaging News the UK needed to target the more difficult packaging materials in order to improve recycling rates.

"So far, we've gone for the relatively easy material, but need to look at the recyclate that is in smaller quantities and makes collection more difficult. We also need to make recycling as easy as possible for people to do," he said.
