Nokia has targeted increased environmental sustainability in the mobile phone industry with a new, more energy-efficient device that uses renewable and recyclable materials in both the phone covers and packaging.

The 3110 Evolve features "bio-covers" made from more than 50% renewable material and packaging with a 60% recycled content.

In addition, the mobile phone is supplied with Nokia's most energy-efficient recharger, which uses 94% less energy than the Energy Star requirements laid down by the US Environmental Protection Agency and US Department of Energy.

Nokia president and chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, speaking at Nokia World 2007 in Amsterdam today (4 December), said the firm was committed to taking a leading role in "increasing environmental awareness and performance" across the industry.

"It is both the responsible thing to do and it makes good business sense," he said.

Nokia introduced compact packaging that reduced material usage by 54% in February 2006. It said that by the end of this year, the move would have taken 5,000 trucks off the roads, reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and saved more than £70m.

Accessories packaging uses 60% less plastic, and cardboard packaging is thinner and uses more recycled materials, the firm said.

The use of alerts to encourage users to unplug their rechargers, launched in May for three phones, will also be extended across the product range.
