Novelis increases used aluminium prices

Aluminium recycler Novelis has increased its prices for used aluminium cans for the third time in a month.

UK recycling manager Andy Doran told Packaging News the decision to increase prices by a further £100 a tonne – to £800 for loose cans and £850 for baled cans – reflected current market prices.

He added that the increases were also part of the firms strategy to “pay good prices for used cans” to boost recycling.

“Our prices have to have a commercial response to changes [in the market],” said Doran.

Novelis has a positive outlook for the coming year and Doran said prices were starting to recover after falling last year. “2009 was a difficult year for people in the industry, but most have come through it well,” he said.

Novelis is the UK’s largest recycler of aluminium cans but also sources a lot of material from across continental Europe.

The firm always has two prices – one £50 higher than the other – to take into account the need to bale the cans for transport.
