The packaging industry has hit back at claims on the BBC’s Dragons’ Den show it lacks knowledge of green issues via this week’s Soap Box forum.

Tiny Box co-founder Rachel Watkyn claimed that packaging firms she had contacted were confused by the difference between recycled and recyclable packaging – in fact, this was one of the reasons why she set up on her own.

Albert Shuttleworth suggested that Watkyn’s research was limited to “generic packaging merchants” rather than manufacturers, which did not reflect the reality of industry awareness of green issues.

“The majority of the industry, especially the leaders are fantstically well briefed and put across the industry’s credentials very well,” he said.

Thomas Chimes echoed the view that “Watkyn is obviously using the wrong suppliers”.

“If people in the industry do not understand the difference between recycled and recyclable, how can they defend themselves against the public perception of them, the general public have been told time and again by this government about how bad packaging is,” he said.

James Smith also talked of his frustration at public confusion and the misinformation about packaging.

Meanwhile, seeing recycled packaging in the market encouraged Danjim Marketing as a sign of the sector’s strength. “It’s about quality, credentials and credibility; pioneering new innovations and not just copying what is out in the market already,” it said.
