Public could be charged for waste collectionstevenkiernan, 22 March 2007Be the first to comment on this article Local authorities should be able to charge residents for waste collection so they can fund increased responsibilities on recycling and waste reduction, according to Sir Michael Lyons final report on the future of local government.
Councils can also face heavy fines should they fail to adhere to their allocated landfill allowance. Sir Michael said: “Charging powers in this area would represent a significant new flexibility to manage pressures on budgets according to local preferences.” His report follows chancellor Gordon Brown’s budget announcement that landfill taxes are to rise.
