Recycling firm aims for return to normality after five days of fireSimeon Goldstein, 10 March 2010Be the first to comment on this article Recycling firm City Industrial Waste is aiming for minimal disruption to its services following a blaze last week that took fire crews more than five days to extinguish. The fire broke out at around 10.15am last Tuesday (2 March) at City Waste’s Recycling Building Two in Campsie, on the outskirts of Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The fire took more than five days to put out – Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue (NIFS) service finally extinguished the blaze at 12.30pm on Saturday. In a statement, the firm said: “City Waste is continuing to work with all the relevant authorities and hopes to be operational as soon as possible with minimal disruption to service.” A spokeswoman for NIFS said an investigation was now underway as to the cause of the fire, although early indications pointed to the ignition being accidental. City Waste continued: “We would like to thank the Fire Service for their efforts in containing the fire and also the Northern Ireland Environment Agency for their continued support and cooperation in helping to manage and mitigate any potential environmental risk.” A video of the blaze was posted to the YouTube website.
