Retailers recommit to pack reduction and recycling logoSimeon Goldstein, 30 April 2008Be the first to comment on this article The vast majority of major UK retailers yesterday (30 April) reiterated their commitment to packaging reduction and recyclability labelling in a series of pledges to tackle climate change. The British Retail Consortium's (BRC) "commitments for a better retailing climate" call for a reduction of own-brand packaging by 2013, compared to 2005, and encourage brand owners to follow suit. Retailers are also pressing for a "more uniform provision of recycling infrastructure in the UK". Signatories have agreed to identify where recycling is the best environmental solution, remove barriers to recycling and provide clear labelling on recyclability. BRC director general Stephen Robertson said the retail sector's "unique close relationship with customers" gave it an opportunity and responsibility to engage on the issue of climate change. The signatories include Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer, but not Morrisons, which is not a BRC member. The five commitments are: Speak Your Mind |
