Rexam has appointed a former local authority recycling manager to a newly-created role aimed at strengthening the firm’s sustainability credentials.

Matthew Rowland-Jones has joined Rexam Beverage Can as UK recycling manager from environmental consultancy AEA Technology.

Prior to that, Rowland-Jones worked in local authorities and was responsible for implementing a number of programmes to increase recycling rates in south Oxfordshire.

In his new role, he will be responsible for developing initiatives to increase recycling rates for drinks cans in the UK, which is the biggest can market in Europe.

In particular, he will work with organisations such as local authorities, Wrap, the waste management industry and Rexam’s customers.

Rexam Beverage Can vice-president for marketing and environmental affairs, John Revess, said: “We can really drive consumer recycling of the beverage can, through changing their understanding and encouraging them to participate in UK wide recycling programmes.”

Rowland-Jones said: “I’m looking forward to working with Rexam and its industry colleagues and partners, to deliver a change in the way that consumers view cans.”
