Scotland hits recycling targetsliz.wells@haymarket.com, 29 May 2008Be the first to comment on this article Scotland has hit its recycling and composting targets for 2007/08, according to figures published this week by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). The figures revealed that Scotland managed a small increase in recycling in the past year, with the national average hovering above the target of 30% at 31.2%. The report showed that 1.1 million tonnes of waste was recycled or composted, 74,000 tonnes of waste were incinerated and 2.3 million tonnes of waste went to landfill. However, according to SEPA, current efforts are unlikely to be enough to meet the challenging targets set out by cabinet minister Richard Lochhead in January. Recycling/composting targets are 40% by 2010, 50% by 2013 and 60% by 2020, with an aspirational target of a minimum of 70% by 2025. “To reach the next target of 40% by 2010 will be the responsibility of everyone in Scotland, not just an issue for the local authorities,” SEPA said in a statement.
