Smurfit Kappa UK has received the Carbon Trust Standard for its efforts to reduce its own carbon emissions by 11% over a 12-month period.

Smurfit Kappa has 20 sites across the UK that have reduced emissions by 8,000 tonnes, the equivalent of 10kg for each tonne of product that it makes.

The reductions have been achieved as part of the firm’s two-year Carbon Management programme. Changes have included reducing vehicle movements and installing inverter drives to reduce plant and machinery energy consumption.

Ian Naylor, Smurfit Kappa strategic development director, said: “Cutting carbon is a priority for our business and delivers tangible bottom-line benefits.

“Increasingly our customers are identifying that wider environmental issues influence consumers buying decisions and consumers will welcome a major packaging company undertaking real carbon reduction action.”

Harry Morrison, general manager of the Carbon Trust Standard, congratulated Smurfit Kappa on achieving the award that is valid for two years.

“Both businesses and consumers share a desire for a credible way to prove an organisation has not only measured, but actually reduced their carbon emissions year-on-year without the use of offsetting,” he said.
