Wrap described Stella Artois joining the scheme last month as “an important step for alcoholic beverage sector” as the firm used the lightest available bottles for its 250ml, 284ml and 330ml bottles.
Nicola Jenkin, beverages category manager, said: “We hope that having such an established brand on board, which has already demonstrated its commitment to reducing packaging, will be a leading example for others to follow.”
Stella Artois is one of the brands owned by InBev. A company spokesperson said it was proud to be the first alcoholic beverage signatory.
“We will be working closely with Wrap to help it achieve its objective of reducing waste. Wrap will be providing support and environmental expertise to Stella Artois on a number of key projects.”
Wrap has said the GlassRite Beer, Cider and Spirits project has removed almost 32,000 tonnes of glass since 2007 and estimates it would be possible to reduce the weight of glass bottles in the sector by a further 80,000 tonnes.
As well as glass, Wrap is also targeting a 15,000 tonne reduction in the amount of aluminium used by the drinks industry.
