Superfos introduces carbon footprint calculator for customers

Superfos, the Danish plastic and cardboard packaging firm, has developed a carbon footprint calculator for its customers and suppliers.

The calculator can work out the emissions produced by raw materials, the production process, disposal and transport of the product.

It can be used to compare design proposals, analyse logistics and investigate the impact of different raw materials and processes.

The company said, as an example, the change from round to square containers can save 8 grams of carbon dioxide due to pallet optimisation, fewer truck loads and fewer raw materials.

The calculation can be used on packs or as a marketing tool, Superfos added.

Product design manager Torben Boer said: “The calculator is both an important part of our carbon footprint strategy and our response to increasing customer demand combined with a lack of market standards in this field.

“Our calculator enables us to differentiate between the waste handling, energy systems and recovery systems in each market including whether there is a recycling system or not.”

Superfos has a factory in Runcorn and has operations in Spain, Poland, France, Belgium, Finland and the US.
