Tesco to start carbon label trial next week

Tesco has said that it would honour the commitment it made at the Carton Conference last month and introduce a carbon label on the packaging of 20 of its products next week.

The carbon label, developed by the Carbon Trust, will appear on products in four categories – laundry detergent, orange juice, potatoes and light bulbs – from next Tuesday (6 May).

It will carry the total grammage of carbon dioxide, or equivalent greenhouse gas, emitted throughout the lifecycle of each product.

The calculation also includes the impact of preparing or using a product and disposing of it.

Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said the company would "encourage all of our suppliers and competitors to support the Carbon Trust in this collaboration".

The multiple's senior packaging buyer, Sonia Raja, told delegates at the Carton Conference at the start of April that Tesco regularly "challenges itself" on the labelling issue and the ultimate aim of the scheme was to "empower the consumer".

Walkers, Boots, Innocent Drinks, Continental Clothing and Halifax have already trialled the label.

Mey Selections, Colours and Morphy Richards have also committed to launching the label on their products shortly.
