Tetra Pak is offering its drinks carton collection service to schools and businesses in the North-East of England, in conjunction with J&B Recycling.

Tetra Pak said that schools in the region used more than 12m juice and milk cartons each year, and the scheme is designed to make recycling easier.

Schools, and businesses, in the 23 local authorities in the North-East can use a web-based facility to obtain a quote from J&B Recycling, which operates the collection service.

J&B commercial manager Mark Penny said people found it difficult to recycle outside the home due to lack of space for different types of waste containers or insufficient waste being generated to justify large-scale collections.

“We have worked closely with Tetra Pak to introduce a flexible carton recycling service for the North-East’s businesses and schools,” he said.

J&B bales the material and, when sufficient quantity is collected, the cartons are sent to Tetra Pak’s Orebro mill in Sweden for reprocessing.

The packaging giant continues to work with UK based mills to look at the possibility of doing the reprocessing here.

The headteacher of Byerley Park Primary School, which has weekly carton collections, said children were “keen to promote an awareness of the environment in which they live”.
