Norfolk Environmental Waste Services (NEWS) has signed a deal to supply 68,000 tonnes of post-consumer waste paper to forest products firm UPM.

The two-year contract – for 34,000 tonnes per year – extends a successful five-year partnership between the two firms and seeks to “provide stability in the current climate”.

A UPM spokesman told Packaging News the current crisis in the recycling sector had not had a major impact on the company.

“Our recovered paper procurement operation at UPM Shotton will continue to need some 650,000 tonnes of post-consumer paper to turn into quality products,” he said.

Steve Jenkins, NEWS local authority contracts manager, praised the UPM’s “professionality” and said the firms had developed a “very good working relationship”.

“Their ongoing support through training and joint projects means that we are able to recycle higher volumes of waste paper in the UK,” he added.

Yesterday, Packaging News’ sister title PrintWeek reported that UPM was restructuring its UK sales team, leading to the departures of Graham Fraser, UPM’s director for magazine papers, and Mike Holland, sales director UPM UK.
