Wales is targeting plastic bag use in the country with the launch of the Get Carried Away scheme to encourage their reuse.

Environment, sustainability and housing minister Jane Davidson is spearheading a radio and online campaign to encourage people to reuse their plastic bags.

The first 1,000 people who register on the website will receive a reusable bag.

In February, Davidson revealed that she had asked her department to develop legislation to ban plastic bags.

She said: “Currently there is a voluntary agreement where certain retailers have agreed to reduce the number of single use carrier bags by 50% – this is a good target.”

“But this does not cover all retailers and still leaves 50% using one-trip plastic bags,” she added.

A total of 480 million plastic bags were used in Wales last year. The estimated cost of removing this form of litter is £1m.
